Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Famed For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at 89 Years Old.
This award-nominated actor Diane Ladd passed away aged 89.
The star, with credits featured Chinatown, left this world in her residence in California’s Ojai. Her passing was shared in a statement shared by her offspring, Oscar-winning actor her daughter Laura Dern.
Her daughter, who starred with Diane Ladd in various films like Wild at Heart, called her “my incredible hero and my special gift of a mother”, noting that she was at her bedside when she passed.
“She was an exceptional mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative and caring individual that seemed almost dreamlike,” she expressed. “We were lucky to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Initial Roles and Breakthrough
Ladd’s early career saw supporting roles on television series such as The Fugitive whereas the 1970s saw her starring alongside actor Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
In the same year, 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod in the supporting actress category.
Subsequent Years
Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow, a suspense story as well as comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in Alice, a television series inspired by her earlier movie.
In the subsequent decade, she earned an additional Oscar nomination for supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her part in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the mother of her actual daughter the character played by Dern. A year later she received another nomination for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie that also featured Dern.
“This was the picture which Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she flew us to England for a royal premiere and an event in our honor,” Ladd recalled of Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, holding both our hands, with tears, watching us perform.”
That decade included parts in humorous films The Cemetery Club reuniting her with her co-star Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a political comedy, starring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth where she played the mother of Dern once more. That period also earned her Emmy nominations for work in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.
Partnerships with Her Daughter
She persisted in performing with her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, a movie, Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen next to Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her more recent television parts featured Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.
Behind the Camera
Ladd also wrote and directed the comedy Mrs Munck featuring herself and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a great actor,” she said. “I’m privileged to have directed him in a film. Actually, I am the sole female in history to direct her ex-husband. I humorously say: ‘I tell women, if you seek payback, guide your former spouse.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
Family Ties
She was additionally a relative of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a great influence in my life”.
During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and advised she only had half a year left but made a full recovery when her daughter shifted her to another medical facility.
“When you use your pain and not let it back up like an injury, instead apply it to investigate, to clarify the journey for you and those around, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
