For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories built from the past of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in episode 6 leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the means to overcome him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act wasn't just a defensive killing.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is known about Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
