The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
